Tooth Extractions at the clinic

Treatment can include

  • Simple extractions
  • Surgical extractions
  • Problematic tooth removal
  • Wisdom tooth evaluation
  • Pre-orthodontic extractions where indicated

When removal is the right decision

Removal is considered when a tooth cannot be repaired predictably — extensive decay, a fracture below the gum, advanced gum disease with lost support — or when it is part of a wider plan, such as making space during orthodontic treatment. Where a tooth can be saved and maintained, saving it is usually preferred.

What the appointment involves

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic. A simple extraction lifts the tooth out; a surgical extraction may involve a small incision or sectioning the tooth, which is common for wisdom teeth or roots that are awkwardly positioned. You are given specific aftercare instructions before you leave.

Healing and aftercare

A blood clot forms in the socket and needs protecting: avoid rinsing vigorously, smoking or using a straw for the first day or so, and keep the rest of your mouth clean. Some swelling and discomfort for a few days is expected. Increasing pain after three or four days, heavy bleeding or fever should be reported to the clinic.
