What a dental implant actually is

An implant is a small titanium or ceramic post placed into the jawbone to take the place of a missing tooth root. Once the bone has healed around it, the post supports a crown, bridge or denture. Because the support comes from the bone rather than from neighbouring teeth, healthy teeth on either side are left untouched.

How treatment usually progresses

Treatment normally begins with an examination and imaging to check bone volume and general oral health. The post is then placed under local anaesthetic. A healing period follows — commonly a few months — during which the bone integrates with the implant, and a temporary solution can be used in the meantime. The final crown or bridge is fitted once healing is complete.

Looking after an implant

An implant does not decay, but the gum and bone around it can become inflamed if plaque builds up. Daily brushing, cleaning between the teeth and regular professional cleaning appointments are what keep it stable long term. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes are the two factors most often linked with implant problems.
