A crown covers and protects a tooth that has been heavily filled, cracked or root canal treated. A bridge fills a gap using the teeth on either side for support. Dentures remain an option where several teeth are missing.

Two different ways to fill a gap

A bridge is fixed in place and is typically supported by the teeth on either side of the gap or by implants. A denture is removable and rests on the gums, sometimes clasped to remaining teeth. Fixed solutions feel more like natural teeth; removable ones can replace more teeth at once and are easier to modify later.

How the choice is made

The decision depends on how many teeth are missing and where, the condition of the remaining teeth and gums, bone levels, and your own priorities. An examination with radiographs is needed before any option can be recommended sensibly.

Living with a replacement

New dentures need a settling-in period; speech and chewing improve with practice, and small adjustments are normal. Removable dentures are cleaned out of the mouth daily and generally left out overnight. Bridges need careful cleaning underneath, since decay and gum problems around the supporting teeth are the main reason they fail.
