What professional cleaning removes

Plaque that is not brushed away hardens into tartar (calculus), which brushing alone cannot remove. Tartar holds bacteria against the gum line and keeps the gums inflamed. Scaling removes those deposits from above and just below the gum margin so the gums can settle down.

Bleeding gums are a signal, not a normal event

Gums that bleed when brushing are usually inflamed. At this stage the condition is generally reversible with cleaning and better daily habits. Left alone over years, inflammation can progress to affect the bone supporting the teeth, and that damage is not fully reversible.

What happens between appointments matters more

A cleaning appointment resets the situation; daily habits decide what happens next. Brushing twice a day, cleaning between the teeth once a day, and a checkup interval suited to your gum health are what keep results stable.
